OpenVet: Dr. Andrew Heller Joins as Co-Founder to Help Build Medical-Grade Intelligence Infrastructure for Veterinary Medicine

OpenVet establishes the first medical intelligence infrastructure built for the full complexity of animal health; Dr. Heller, IndeVets co-founder and former Chief Medical Officer, joins as OpenVet's Chief Operating Officer.

MIAMI, FL — January 6, 2026 — OpenVet today announced that Andrew Heller, DVM, joined as Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Heller is partnering with Founder and CEO Adam Sager to advance OpenVet's mission to arm every veterinarian with the world's best intelligence, empowering them to practice at the absolute limit of clinical judgment.

Dr. Heller brings rare credibility across both frontline clinical medicine and large-scale veterinary systems. Prior to OpenVet, he was a co-founder and long-time leader at IndeVets, where he helped shape clinical standards, quality systems, and mentorship frameworks as the workforce scaled nationwide. As Chief Medical Officer, he led the development of clinical governance and support structures for veterinarians. As Chief Growth Officer, he helped expand the organization to more than 250 veterinarians and over 4,000 hospital partners.

That experience directly informs OpenVet's approach. Building medical infrastructure requires more than technical capability. It requires an understanding of how standards are earned, how trust is maintained, and how systems behave under real clinical pressure. As COO, Dr. Heller will focus on translating clinical reality into system design, protecting medical rigor as the platform scales, and ensuring that adoption maintains and promotes professional standards.

"Andrew understands veterinary medicine not as an abstraction, but as a system with real constraints, tradeoffs, and consequences," said Adam Sager, Founder and CEO of OpenVet. "He has built clinical standards, earned practitioner trust, and scaled a platform inside the profession. That combination is essential to building infrastructure veterinarians can rely on in real clinical moments."

Sager previously founded and scaled Canary, a category-defining AI and IoT company, and brings more than a decade of experience building high-stakes AI and machine learning systems where trust, safety, and accountability are non-negotiable.

"I joined OpenVet because veterinary medicine needs shared intelligence that respects how clinicians actually reason under pressure," said Dr. Andrew Heller. "Across species, across practice types, and across levels of uncertainty, veterinarians need systems that clarify thinking rather than replace it. OpenVet is building a computable medical framework that makes assumptions explicit, shows its reasoning, and supports professional judgment rather than undermining it."

More than 30 billion animals live under human care worldwide. Veterinary medicine has never had a unified medical system despite its central role in human life and economies. Clinicians operate across dozens of species and practice contexts, relying on fragmented evidence while making time-critical decisions under uncertainty.

OpenVet is building the underlying medical intelligence infrastructure for animal health, decoding complexity into a single computable medical framework that supports how veterinarians actually think and act in practice. Its core principle is explicit responsibility: clinical judgment remains with the veterinarian, and the system is built to surface assumptions, show reasoning, and make uncertainty visible.

Founders Heller and Sager will be attending VMX, introducing OpenVet to a broader veterinary audience and expanding OpenVet's exclusive beta program.
